Sampson Johnson Obituary

Mr. Sampson McArthur Johnson,  age 74 passed on Sunday, June 23, 2019 at New Hanover Regional Medical Center, Wilmington, NC.

Sampson McArthur Johnson (Mack) was born December 26, 1944, in Pittsboro, NC to Mamie J. Johnson and the late Lossell Aaron Johnson. He transitioned from this life on Sunday, June 23, 2019, at New Hanover Regional Hospital in Wilmington, NC.

Mack was a proud graduate of Horton High School in 1973. He completed his associate degree at Sandhills Community College in Pinehurst, NC. Mack was a licensed welder and mechanic. He served in the United States Air Force as a helicopter and airplane mechanic. He was an entrepreneur and enjoyed talking you into a “good deal”.  Mack was also a musician and loved writing songs and playing the drums and guitar. He was a great cook and was known for hosting gatherings for family and friends. He was a lifelong learner and imparted to family members that knowledge was the key to their future. Mack was a member of the Church of God of Prophecy for most of his life. He was called into the ministry during his later life and one of his favorite scriptures was “I can do all things through Christ, who gives me strength, Philippians 4:13.”

Mack was a devoted son, companion, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. He was so proud of his babies and all of their accomplishments. Mack’s day was not complete without checking on his Mother and every Sunday night they watched their favorite gospel preacher together. He was the life of all of our family gatherings and made sure that everyone had a good laugh. There was never a dull moment when Mack was around. Mack knew how to make all of us feel loved and words cannot express how much we will miss him. Mack was preceded in death by his father, Lossell Johnson, brother, Aaron Johnson, sister Cynthia Donaldson and daughter Darlene Johnson.

He leaves to cherish his memories: his mother, Rev. Mamie Johnson of Pittsboro, NC; his common law wife and lifelong love, Shirley Hawkins of Wilmington, NC; two daughters, Shaneka Elise Johnson of Wilmington, NC, and Arlene Johnson of Indianapolis, IN; seven grandchildren Jaziah Johnson, Nyamekye Johnson, Jywan Johnson, Jyshon Johnson, Jamayca Johnson, Brittany, Ashley and a great grandchild ; two children (he helped to  raise) Nicole and Raheem; three sisters Malinda Marsh of Pittsboro, NC; Andrea Murray Lichtman (Steven) of Pittsboro, NC; Teria Bouknight (Carlos) of Pittsboro, NC; three brothers, Howard Johnson (Helen) of Upper Marlboro, MD, Cornelius Johnson of Pittsboro, NC and Anthony Johnson (Annette) of Fayetteville, NC; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
