Robert Covington, age 58 of 3010 Carrington Ln. Sanford, NC passed on Saturday, April 6, 2019 at his residence.
Robert Covington was born on February 27, 1961 in Lee County, North Carolina to the late Roy Covington and Barbara Covington. He gained his heavenly wings on April 6, 2019. Robert graduated from Sanford Central High School in 1979. After graduation, Robert entered the workforce. He worked at Sanford Radiator Shop as a mechanic. Robert was also employed with Trion as a Master Scheduler for 35 years.
Robert was a loving son, father, brother and friend. He was always willing to help others. Family was very important to Robert and he was always there to help anytime he was needed. It was very common for Robert to say “if you ever need anything, let me know.” He loved to make and repair things with his hands whether it was around the house, for a family member or friend, or even the church. Robert also loved his cars; to name a few, he drove a Camaro, ‘75 Monte Carlo, ‘67 Chevy Chevelle, ‘70 Chevy pick-up truck, but his favorite was his beloved Corvette.
Robert was a member of the Sanford Masonic Lodge #101 where he served as the Treasurer for several years. During his time as a Mason, he embodied the mission to serve the community in various capacities.
Proverbs 18:22 (NKJV) states, “He who finds a wife finds a good thing, and obtains favor from the Lord”. Robert met the love of his life, Donna in 1985. They recently celebrated their 34th wedding anniversary.
Robert grew up attending St. Mark Holiness Church, Sanford NC and also attended Star of Hope Free Will Baptist Church, Sanford, NC. He later became an active disciple of Cameron Grove A.M.E. Zion Church where he served on several auxiliaries: Honorary Life Member of the Women’s Home and Overseas Missionary Society, member of the Connectional Lay Council, Church Executive Committee, Pastor’s Estimating Committee, Men of Zion Ministry, and the Rams Small Group Class Leaders Ministry. He was appointed a member of the Board of Trustees under the pastoral ministry of the former pastor, Reverend Chalmers McDougald. In 2015, he was elevated to the position of Chairman of the Trustee Board under the pastoral ministry of Reverend Kenneth Swann. As the Chairman, he oversaw the work of the following ministries: Transportation, Church Security, Parking Lot, and the Audio-Visual Ministry, to name a few. Robert was always finding ways to be a blessing to the church. He designed and erected the cross above the baptismal pool, installed the outside lamps, and installed the kitchen island in the church fellowship hall. In October of 2018, Robert received the Distinguished Service Award for going above and beyond the call of duty in service to the church and setting an example for others to follow from the Dunn Lillington District, Reverend Hanna Broome, Presiding Elder.
Robert was preceded in death by his father, Roy Covington.
Robert leaves to honor and cherish his memories: His loving wife, Donna; children, Dr. Sharron Renee of Sanford, NC and Amber Christina of Charlotte, NC; one grandson, Ryan Cameron Robert Clinton; his mother, Barbara Covington of Sanford, NC; siblings, Roy Covington (Regina) of Pooler, Georgia and Barbara Covington of Richmond, Virginia; mother-in-law, Evangelist Irene Campbell of Bunnlevel, NC; sister/brother in laws, Terry Campbell of Bunnlevel, NC, Richard Douglas (Jackie) of Bunnlevel, NC; one uncle, David Murchison (Devora) of Sanford, NC; one aunt, Gertrude Snipes of Sanford, NC; two goddaughters, Delilah Kelly of Sanford, NC and Faith Woodard of Broadway, NC; Godson, Jason Thompson of Sanford, NC; a spiritual son, Stephen Woodard (Jessica); spiritual daughters, Ciera Dixon, Dr. Jasmine Nixon and Shamira Shaeffers; one spiritual sister, Gena Kelly; two spiritual brothers, Sorrell Saunders (Selina) and Dwight Williams; six nieces; three nephews; and a host of other cousins, relatives and friends.
