Geneva Hicks Obituary

Geneva Hicks age 76 of 203 Windhill Ct. Greensboro, NC passed on Monday, September, 9, 2019 at her residence.

Geneva McDuffie Hicks affectionately known as “Moma, Ma, Grandma, Aunt Gen, Ms. G, Ms. Geneva and Sister Hicks” was called home to be with the Lord on Monday, September 9, 2019 at her home.

Geneva was born Tuesday, December 8, 1942 to Ad Mack McDuffie and Alice Newby McDuffie in Sanford, North Carolina.  She grew up in Sanford, North Carolina and attended Jonesboro Elementary School and W.B. Wicker High School (Class of 1962). She attended Barber-Scotia College in Concord, North Carolina where she received her Bachelors Degree and Education.  She furthered her education at Columbia University, Columbia South Carolina where she received her Masters Degree in Early Childhood Education.

In 1964 she married the late James Otis Hicks and they were blessed with two children and many years of happiness.

She taught elementary school for Chesterfield County Schools (Pageland, South Carolina) for a number of years before returning to Cameron, North Carolina (Johnsonville) in 1984.  She continued her love for children by substitute teaching in Lee County Schools (Sanford, NC) and Richmond County Schools (Rockingham, NC). In 1997 she opened, owned, and operated First Smart Child Care in Johnsonville where she taught early education and child development to young children until her health declined.

Geneva attended New Zion Baptist Church, Sanford North Carolina where she sang in the junior choir and was a member.  In later years she joined Mt. Moriah Missionary Baptist Church, Cameron, North Carolina where she remained a member.

Although Geneva will be greatly missed by her family and friends, we give God the Glory and the Honor for not only the life she lived, but the lives she touched in so many ways.

Geneva was preceded in death by her husband, James Otis Hicks, her parents, Ad Mack McDuffie and Alice Newby McDuffie; her brothers, Wade McDuffie and Mack McDuffie, Jr.; her sisters, Maxine McDuffie and Eva McDuffie Williams; her nephew, Eddie B. Williams, Jr.; and her niece, Michelle McDuffie Reed.

Geneva is survived by two daughters: Alisha Hicks-Womack (Frederick) of Thomasville, NC; Sharon Hicks-Boggs (Samuel) of Greensboro, NC; six grandchildren, Leotis A. Hicks, Daequon M. McLean, Kaylynn L. Jones, Kendall L. Womack, Kennedy G. Womack, and Sabien R. Boggs; and one great grandson, Daelyn M. McLean.  She also leaves to cherish her memories; one sister, Alice McDuffie of Sanford, NC; two brothers, Robert McDuffie and Wayne McDuffie both of Sanford, NC and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
