Bennie Lee Thompson, age 70 of 4318 Lee Ave., Sanford, NC passed on Saturday, November 16, 2019 at Central Carolina Hospital.
Bennie Lee Thompson was born on December 21, 1948 to the late Alene Thompson Atwater and the late Lynn Wicker in Goldston, North Carolina. He transitioned into his eternal rest on November 16, 2019.
Bennie was a 1967 graduate of JS Waters High School in Goldston, North Carolina. He then served in the United States Army for 5 years and received an honorable discharge. Bennie was a dedicated worker and not a man of idleness. We saw this from his employment at Allied Signal /Honeywell in Moncure, NC where he retired after 30 years of service, Chatham County Schools as a bus driver and custodian, custodian at First Baptist Church and First Presbyterian Church in Sanford, NC and a driver for Academy Bus Company of Durham, NC.
Bennie was a faithful member of Roberts Chapel Missionary Baptist Church in Goldston North Carolina. He served as Treasurer of the Finance Committee, Chairman of the Trustee Board, Usher, and Custodian. His talents and dedication will be greatly missed.
As a result of the early training that was instilled in Bennie by his grandmother, Jewel Thompson, he was a great cook, and a remarkably neat and organized person. He spent hours starching and ironing his shirts and jeans and even more time shining his shoes and cars! His 1992 Candy Apple Red Mustang GT was his prized possession and was always spotless!! Bennie was a lover of family and friends and that love was reciprocated by the many friends and family that showed so much love to him during his illness.
He leaves to cherish his memory, his loving and devoted wife of 25 years, Gwendolyn Cotten Thompson, of the home; one son, Brian Keith Thompson, Siler City, NC.; one daughter, SPC Jasmine Nicole Thompson, Fort Bliss Texas; three grandchildren: Br'ian Thompson, Atlanta Ga., Carter and Caiden Thompson, Sanford, NC; stepmother, Elmira Wicker, Goldston NC; stepfather, Ernest Atwater (Darlene), Boston, Mass.; one brother, Ronald Atwater (Linda), Savannah, GA.; three sisters; Jackulene Wicker Goldston, Sanford, NC, Regina Robinson, Dorchester, Mass, and Veralynn Wicker Covington, Sanford, NC; mother-in-law, Josephine Cotten; sister-in-law, Pandora Paschal (Jerry), two brother in laws, Gerald Cotten (Peggy), Darren Cotten (Vicky), a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
