Mr. Rufus D. Chalmers, age 68 of 24808 HWY 24/27, Cameron, NC passed on Tuesday, October 3, 2011 at Moore Regional Hospital, Pinehurst, NC.

Funeral Service: Saturday, October 8, 2011 - 1 p.m. St. John Pentecostal Church,447 Dove Road,Cameron, NC. Burial will follow in the Lee Memory Gardens.

Wake: Friday, October 7, 2011, 7 - 8 p.m. at True Gospel Church, 405 South Third Street, Sanford, N.C.

Rufus Daniel Chalmers,son of the late John D. Chalmers and Elder Virginia Smith Chalmers,was born August 3,1943, and exchanged this life on earth for one eternal peace and rest October 3,2011 at Moore Regional Hospital.

He grew up in Harnett County and was a 1961 graduate of Johnsonville High School, under Mr.C.L. Powell. After working at the old Lee County Hospital several years, he later joined the U.S. Army. He moved up in rank quickly, and became a paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne Division of Fort Bragg.During his career he was stationed in Germany and Panama, and served one tour of duty in Vietnam War where he was awarded the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart. He retired Army Sfc. with twenty-two years of service. Rufus was a member of the DAV, American Legion, and the VFW where he served as Chaplain.

His spiritual discipleship began at Mt. Moriah Baptist Church. In later years he joined St John Church under the leadership of the late Elder Ethel M. Evans. After that he joined Pilgrim Rest Church, then True Gospel UCOG. Rufus served faithfully as a Trustee and Sunday School Superintendent until his death.

Rufus was married to Shirley Monroe Chalmers. To this union two children were born, Kemp and Carolyn. He loved God, his family, and friends. He stayed active, liked to travel, work in his yard, garden, and tand to his coy fish pond. He will truly be missed by his family, church family, and friends.

Rufus was a devoted loving husband and father. He leaves to cherish his memories, his loving wife of forty-four years, Shirley Monroe Chalmers; one son, Kemp Chalmers(Mi Truong), of Hong Kong,China, one daughter, Carolyn Chalmers of Durham,NC; one sister Sylvia McCrimmon(Herman),of Cameron,NC; two grandsons,Kemp Chalmers,Jr.,Philip Chalmers, their mother Latonia Clark Chalmers; one granddaughter,Kristine Brown, God-daughter,Jamita Taylor; God-son, Ryan Belk; his mother-in-law,Mother Lillie Monroe; three brother-in-laws, Ernest Monroe(Betty), Ronnie Monroe(Tammy), Wayne Monroe; one sister-in-law, Carolyn, all of Olivia NC; two uncles, Edward Smith(Maggie), Lonell Smith(Becky),of Cameron,NC; one aunt, Evelyn Weathers of Cameron, NC; a special cousin and "traveling buddy", Jerry Graham, and a host of neices, nephews, cousins, and friends.
